Darell Boney,

hired through Building Skills New York to work for Elicc, the curtain wall manufacturer for The Alloy Block

As part of our Equity plan, we have worked with Building Skills New York to support local hiring for the first tower. Darrell was an early participant in the program and started his career working with Elicc Americas Corporation, the curtain wall manufacturer and has been a great addition to the project.

"In so many ways, working on the Alloy Block has changed my career trajectory. It changed the work I thought I wanted to do and it gave me a solid set of skills that I can use in the future."

How did you first hear about / get involved with the Alloy Block project?

Back in 2022, I was actually working for a different company and on my lunch break I saw a flyer in the library advertising HVAC training sessions. I decided to send an email because I was looking for work at the time and by the time summer came around, I was enrolled in HVAC training. In about 12 weeks, I learned all the basics of HVAC systems and I became focused on landing a job. I eventually got a call from Building Skills New York and was told to show up at 100 Flatbush at 6:45 AM the next day, and that I would be working for Elicc Americas. My primary responsibility at the site was to prepare windows for installation but I ended up learning so many more skills, from caulking to fixing windows that weren’t able to open or close properly.

What has your experience been like working on the project?

I have been thoroughly enjoying working on the Alloy Block project. The program led by Building Skills New York has done a lot for me. Prior to being placed at this site, I didn’t have a lot of stability in my life and I was trying to find a career that I could pursue long term. Seeing that flyer back in 2022 quite literally changed my life. Everyone involved with the program and the overall development site has been kind, respectful and has gone above and beyond to boost my career skills. I’m very grateful to have landed this position.

How has working on this project changed your career trajectory and aspirations?

In so many ways, working on the Alloy Block has changed my career trajectory. It changed the work I thought I wanted to do and it gave me a solid set of skills that I can use in the future, even if I decide to pursue a career in a slightly different field. The certifications and industry knowledge I have learned during my time here are invaluable and can apply to a lot of different trades. The best part, for me, is that Ellic is planning to take me to the next job! I’ve built a great relationship with Ellic during my time here and I’m excited to continue advancing my career and skill set at the next project site.
